The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at The University of Texas at Tyler consists of two student-athletes representing each Patriots sports team.
These student-athletes are assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and offer input on the rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes' lives at UT Tyler and all NCAA member institutions.
They also promote communication between athletics administration and student-athletes, work to promote a positive student-athlete image, organize community service efforts, build a sense of community within the athletics program, and generate a student-athlete voice within the campus athletics department formulation of policies.
SAAC committees are found on all NCAA campuses and are divided into Divisions I, II, and III. UT Tyler is a member of the NCAA Division III. Two members of the UT Tyler SAAC serve on the American Southwest Conference SAAC.
NCAA legislation mandates that each conference have a conference SAAC in order to strengthen the communication among the campus and national committees. Through increased communication and networking, the SAAC's hope is to better represent the views of all student-athletes.
The UT Tyler SAAC meets monthly.

UT Tyler SAAC Activities
Gear-Up Grant
The Tyler GEAR UP program, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.
The six-year renewable grant from the U.S. Department of Education will total $3.1 million.
Tyler schools involved in the GEAR UP Grant program are Dogan Middle School, Stewart Middle School and Boulter Middle School. Students in the grant program have taken tours of the campus through the admissions department and attended UT Tyler volleyball and basketball games.
SAAC members participate in an e-buddy program with some of the GEAR UP Grant students to encourage them in school and extracurricular activities.
Salvation Army Christmas Kettles
The UT Tyler SAAC helps those who are struggling by assisting in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles. Click here to read a letter from the Salvation Army.
Organ Donor Awareness Program
The University of Texas at Tyler SAAC committee has once again partnered with the American Southwest Conference to sponsor the Organ Donor Awareness Program as a community outreach program. The ASC Organ Donor Awareness Program was proposed by recently retired Conference Commissioner Fred Jacoby who is a heart transplant recipient.
The ever-increasing shortage of donors is the major limitation in organ transplantation. The ASC Donor Awareness Program is an excellent outreach program that has great humanitarian and public relations benefits. The life that can be saved may be that of a family member or a friend. Every time we save a life, the program is worth all of our collective efforts.
At two games per year, SAAC committee members hand out Organ Donor Awareness cards to encourage the public to join in the effort.
Patriot Sports Clinic
The UT Tyler Athletic Department hosts the Patriots Sports Clinic each spring for approximately 150 fifth graders from Tyler ISD's Austin Elementary. Over the course of a day, the students rotate through five sports stations gaining experiences in new sports. All 15 UT Tyler teams participate in the event.
