With their 3-2 road win over Mississippi College on Saturday, the UT Tyler men’s soccer team captured the American Southwest Conference East Division Championship in just their first year of conference competition. “I am excited, but not surprised,” said head coach Kenny Jones. “I knew we had a good team and that we were capable of winning the division title, but the fact that we are 12-0 in conference play is really something exceptional for a young team like ours.” UT Tyler is 15-1 on the season with their only loss coming to NCAA Division II power St. Edward’s in non-conference play. “Winning a divisional title would have been tough with a veteran team, but for our guys to step-up and meet the challenge in our first year in the ASC is really an accomplishment,” said Jones. The Patriots will travel to Clarksville, Ark. to play University of the Ozarks on Friday before rounding-out their regular season on Sunday at Austin College. UT Tyler then returns home to play host to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national soccer tournament which will be held on the UT Tyler campus Oct. 30 – Nov. 1. UT Tyler is a part of the USCAA in order to allow post-season opportunities to teams while the Patriots are in their required provisional membership period with the NCAA. The UT Tyler men are ranked #1 in the final USCAA national standings and will be the top seed for the tournament. In other news, the ASC office announced Wednesday that UT Tyler freshman Travis Whitehurst, a graduate of T.K. Gorman High School, is the conference’s east division offensive player of the week. Whitehurst played an impact role from his midfielder position, scoring three goals in road wins at Louisiana College and Mississippi College over the weekend to help the Patriots claim the divisional title. Whitehurst scored goals on each of his two shots against Louisiana College, then came back the next day to set-up the Patriots second goal and nail the game-winner in the 83rd minute at Mississippi College.
