Patriots Shutout Wiley in Home Opener

The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team shutout Wiley College, 11-0, in the team's home opener Saturday at the UT Tyler soccer field.

Four different Patriots players scored two goals in the game: Malek Bekka, Adam McAlpine, Michael Baumgartner and Garrett Hamilton.

UT Tyler (3-0) scored six goals in the first half, opening the onslaught with a blast from Skyler Clarkston in the 13th minute. Bekka assisted Eric Dygert on the Patriots' next goal at the 16-minute mark and UT Tyler scored almost one goal per minute for the next six minutes.

Geoff Sherman and Andy Rogers split the goal-keeping duties for the Patriots and the UT Tyler defense, led by Apollo Turnbow, allowed only one shot-on-goal from Wiley.

With his two goals today, Bekka brought his season total to a team-leading five.

UT Tyler opens American Southwest Conference play next Saturday when they host Texas-Dallas beginning at 3 p.m.
