Patriots Soccer Teams Sweep ASC Matches
September 24, 2004

Tyler Morning Telegraph

Lindsey HenrieThe University of Texas at Tyler men's and women's soccer teams chalked up their first conference wins of the season Friday afternoon with a sweep over the University of the Ozarks at the Patriot soccer field on the UT Tyler campus.

The women fell behind in the first half but rallied with four second-half goals for a 5-3 final score. The victory was also the women's first win of the year as Patricia Slate led the attack with two goals and one assist.

A Derek Meller goal in the 25th minute of play was all the scoring UT Tyler needed as the Patriot men outlasted the Ozarks, 1-0, to draw even in conference play (4-1, 1-1).

In the women's game, UT Tyler outshot the Lady Eagles 34-14 in the game and dominated the second half. Slate's first goal accounted for the only first-half scoring as the Patriots trailed 2-1.

The Patriots women (2-2, 1-1) tied the game in the 46th minute as Jenna Lyle finished off a Slate pass and, 10 minutes later, Slate scored again to give the Patriots the lead.

Derek MellerLindsey Henrie added an unassisted goal to widen the gap to 4-2 and, after an Ozarks (1-6, 1-2) goal, Amanda Curbey scored on a Tiffany Cooksey assist for the insurance goal to seal the win.

Patriots goalkeeper Geoff Sherman, a T.K. Gorman graduate, made nine saves. The backline play of Alan Hardin, Apollo Turnbow, Eric Dygert and Scott Frickey played key roles in the win. The Ozarks (4-4, 2-1) outshot UT Tyler, 18-11, including 9-7 in shots on goal.

The Patriots return to conference play on Sunday as they host Ausitn College in a men's and women's doubleheader. The women start at 1 p.m. and the men start at 3 p.m.
