Head coach Stefani Webb led the Patriot women onto the UT Tyler soccer field for the first time. With her came eight freshman and three transfers new to the university, including one that would make her presence felt immediately and often throughout the game. First-year goalkeeper Kristen Robertson, who graduated from Robert E. Lee, had 23 saves on the game, including two diving stops in the waning minutes of overtime to maintain the tie. "She is a freshman goalkeeper, but she really stepped up her game," Webb said. "Her intensity fed the team. She is a real shot-stopper." Though the Ospreys from New Jersey kept the action on UT Tyler's half of the field for much of the first period, the Patriots took the early lead on forward Lindsey Henrie's goal with 27:33 to play before halftime. Heather Hass threw the ball in from out of bounds over Henrie's shoulder, leading her into the middle of the field. After one step, Henrie fired the shot, which ricocheted off the top bar of the goal and bounced down behind the goal line. The shot was UT Tyler's first shot on goal in the game and gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead at halftime. Henrie came out firing again only three and-a-half minutes into the second half, again bouncing a shot off the top crossbar. This time though, the ball came down outside of the goal. Before Osprey goalkeeper Becky Baisley, who had six saves in the game, could react Henrie tapped the rebound into the goal, giving UT Tyler a 2-0 edge. Richard Stockton midfielder Katie Henderson got one goal back for the Ospreys' midway though the period. Henderson ripped the shot from 10 yards away and it bounced under a diving Robertson with 33:18 left in regulation. With 13:19 to go in the game, Lindsay Roake lobbed a shot from just inside the keeper's box over Robertson's head and it bounced into the goal just inside of the left post, tying the score 2-2. Though the teams played two 10-minute overtimes, neither could score thanks in large part to both goalkeepers, who combined for 11 saves in the extra period. The UT Tyler women will travel with the men's team to Conway, Ark., to take on Hendrix College at 3 p.m. Sunday with the men's game to follow at 5 p.m. |
