UT Tyler Plays Inaugural Softball Doubleheader
February 21, 2005
Tyler Morning Telegraph

Softball BatterEast Texas sports history was made again on Sunday afternoon. The University of Texas at Tyler played its first softball game.

The Patriots earned a split with Northwood University before more than 500 fans at the UT Tyler Softball Complex.

The Knights won the first game 2-1 before UT Tyler scored an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

Game One

Patriots' hard-throwing right-hander Janielle Morrison kept the Knights off balance at the plate in the first game and threw well enough for a win. However, the Knights made the most of two hits and a Patriot error in the late innings to claim the first game win.

Morrison, the Texas City fireballer, had six strikeouts and one walk.

The Patriots earned their first run of the game as Kourtney Jones came in on a Christian Genthon RBI single.

Opposing starter Kayla Maddox kept the ball around the plate also, striking out four, allowing three hits and a walk.

Ashley Cagle, Genthon and Sara Jones accounted for the Patriots' three hits in the opener.

Game Two

The second game was different as the Patriots erupted for seven runs in a first inning behind a six hits, two errors and a wild pitch.

"We were a little uptight and over anxious in the first game," said first-year coach and former East Texas Baptist mentor Mike Reed. "After we talked, they settled down and played the way they can and had fun playing that last game."

Meanwhile, Kati Good was excellent on the mound, striking out three while allowing only four hits and no walks. She was backed by the shortstop play of Kourtney Jones, who had eight assists.

Krysten Hensley led the bats with a 2-for-3 day, along with an RBI and a run scored. Cagle added two hits, two RBIs and a run.

Also, Lindsey Peters had a big RBI single and Kourtney Jones was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Genthon and Beverly Meek each had a hit, run scored and an RBI.

The Patriots return to action Saturday when they play host to Texas Wesleyan. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
