Softball Takes Two From Mississippi
April 9, 2008

The University of Texas Tyler softball team was forced to rally from a 2-0 deficit in game two of Wednesday afternoon’s American Southwest Conference doubleheader at UT Tyler Ballpark.

The Patriots used a two-run homerun from sophomore Carly Collins (Ennis, Texas) and a RBI single from freshman Brittanni Hanna (Mesquite, Texas) to get by a Choctaw team that proved to be much scrappier in the day’s second game than they were in the first. UT Tyler took the second game, 3-2 and avoided being the second Top 5 team within a week to fall to Mississippi.

In game one, the Patriots put on one of their patented offensive displays, defeating the Choctaws, 14-2. UT Tyler hit for the cycle in the game with 10 singles, six doubles, one triple and one homerun. Senior Kristen Akin-Henton (Longview, Texas) was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI, as was junior Megan Richardson (Platteville, Colo.), who went 3-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Freshman Sara DeStefano (Franklin, Texas) hit UT Tyler’s lone homerun and was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Harrington (Texarkana, Texas) picked up the win in game one, making her 10-0 on the year. In game two, freshman Kelsey Ainsworth (Mildred, Texas) got the win, to improve her season record to 6-1.

The Patriots are now 27-1 on the year and 11-1 in the ASC. The 27 wins ties the second most season wins in program history. The 2007 season saw the UT Tyler record for most wins with 30.

With the losses, Mississippi College in now 12-16 overall and 3-11 in league play.

UT Tyler will now embark on a six-game road trip, which takes them first to East Texas Baptist for an ASC East doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch in Marshall is scheduled for 12 p.m.
