LC Sweeps Softball to Take Division Title
April 26, 2008

The 5th-ranked Louisiana College softball team took both games of an American Southwest Conference doubleheader against the 2nd-ranked University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday at the UT Tyler Ballpark. With the wins, the Wildcats won the 2008 ASC East Division title and earned a first-round bye in next weekend’s six-team ASC Tournament in Irving, Texas.

In game one, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third inning. Louisiana would go on to add one more run in the top of the fourth via a homerun from Wildcat catcher Erica Harwell.

UT Tyler would finally get on the board in the bottom of the inning, when junior ‘Roo Richardson (Platteville, Colo.) homered to center field.

Louisiana would add one more run in the fifth, but the Patriots would add two more runs of their own in the sixth inning. Sophomore Amanda Busby (Elysian Fields, Texas) scored the first run off of a single from senior Lindsey Peters (Shreveport, La.). On the next at bat, Peters would score on a double from ‘Roo Richardson.

In the seventh, the Patriots attempted to rally as sophomore Carly Collins (Ennis, Texas) hit an RBI double that scored junior Courtney Carrizales (Houston, Texas) to bring UT Tyler within two at 6-4.

Despite their best efforts, the Patriots’ rally would be cut short and they would lose for just the fourth time this season.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Harrington (Texarkana, Texas) allowed four runs off of five hits and struck out three in just her second loss of the season.

In the second game, the Patriots were unable to score any runs and were shutout for only the second time this season. The only other shutout also came at the hands of the Wildcats.

Freshman pitcher Stacy Shepherd (Houston, Texas) got her first loss of the season as she allowed one earned run off of four hits, while striking out five batters.

The Patriots now stand 35-5 on the year and 19-5 in the ASC, while Louisiana improves to 36-4 overall and 21-3 in league play.

UT Tyler now advances to their first ever ASC Championship Tournament which will take place on May 1-3 at Southwest Park in Irving. The Patriots, the No. 2 seed from the East, will take on the No. 3 seed from the West, Howard Payne at 6 p.m.
