Softball Earns 2-1 Win Over Maryville
February 24, 2008

The UT Tyler pitching staff combined for ten strikeouts and the Patriots earned their fifth straight victory in a thrilling, 2-1 softball game against Maryville (Mo.) Sunday morning at the UT Tyler Ballpark.

Kelsey Harrington got the start for the Patriots and went three and one-thirds innings with five strikeouts before Lauren Scruggs replaced her in the fourth.

The Patriots’ first run came in the top of the fourth when Megan Richardson doubled to centerfield, scoring Julie Smith from second.  Smith had reached base two batters earlier on a walk.

Maryville responded with a two-out single from Melinda Flowers that plated Stephanie Oldani.  With Maryville runners on first and second, Scruggs replaced Harrington and ended scoring threat by setting up a Maryville groundout to second baseman Lindsey Peters.

The 1-1 tie held until the top of the seventh when Sara DeStefano singled to short and Kate Lightfield came in to run for DeStefano.  Lightfield advanced to second when Amanda Busby grounded out.

Peters ripped an RBI single to score Lightfield for the winning run.

After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt by Maryville in the bottom of the seventh, Scruggs struck out the next two Maryville batters.

The Patriots improve to 5-0 on the season and Maryville drops to 1-2.
