Softball Sweeps Classic With Win Over Webster

The University of Texas at Tyler softball team completed its sweep of the 2008 Easton Classic on Sunday afternoon with an impressive 13-1 win over Webster in five innings at the UT Tyler Ballpark.
The Patriots put on quite the offensive clinic as seniors Nicole Willhoite (Conroe Texas and Kristen Akin-Henton (Longview, Texas), juniors Kate Bell (Forney, Texas) and Megan Richardson (Platteville, Colo.) and freshman Megan Warren (Southlake, Texas) all hit doubles in the five-inning affair, with Richardson hitting two. Richardson would finish the contest by going 3-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBIs. Sophomore Rachel Roeten (Shreveport, La.) continued the scoring barrage by hitting a triple that scored two runs. In the game, 11 UT Tyler players combined for a total of 15 hits.
Sophomore Loren Parks (Brownsboro, Texas) picked up the win on the mound for the Patriots striking out 3 of 14 batters and giving up just one runs off of two hits in four innings of work. Freshman Stacy Shepherd (Houston, Texas) threw one inning of relief for UT Tyler, facing five batters and striking out three.
The Patriots now stand at 6-0 on the young season, while Webster stands at 0-4.
UT Tyler will return to action on Friday evening when it travels to Longview, Texas to compete in the 2008 LeTourneau Softball Tournament. The Patriots will open with #3 Plattsburgh St. at 6 p.m., followed by Cornell College at 8 p.m.
