Softball Tops #3 Plattsburgh, Cornell

LONGVIEW, Texas--The University of Texas at Tyler softball team picked up two big wins on Friday evening in the 2008 LeTourneau Spring Softball Tournament. In the first game, the Patriots knocked off #3 Plattsburgh St., 11-1. In the nightcap, UT Tyler continued to roll, blasting Cornell College, 12-2, in five innings.
In the first game, junior Amanda Richardson, junior Kate Bell, and sophomore Carly Collins all hit homeruns to give the Patriots their seventh, eighth and ninth homeruns of the young season. Sophomore Julie Smith also had a big game for UT Tyler as she went 4-for-5 with one hit and one run.
Freshman Kelsey Harrington picked up her third win of the year by striking out eight batters and allowing just one earned run off of two Plattsburgh hits in her complete game appearance.
The win was the Patriots’ second win of the season against a Top 25 team.
In game two, Cornell College provided little resistance to a powerful UT Tyler offense, as the Patriots scored 12 runs off 9 hits. 11 of UT Tyler’s 12 runs came in the first inning of the game.
Kate Bell once again came up big for UT Tyler by going 2-for-2 with two runs and four RBIs. Bell, sophomore Amanda Busby and freshman Sara DeStefano each hit homeruns in the game, bringing the Patriots total of homeruns of the season to 12. UT Tyler currently has a team batting average of .418 and a team slugging percentage of .697.
Sophomore Loren Parks picked up the win in the circle for the Patriots by pitching three innings and allowing no earned runs off of one hit.
With the pair of wins, UT Tyler improves to 8-0 on the year, while Plattsburgh fell to 1-1 and Cornell fell to 2-2.
The Patriots continue play in the Letourneau Spring Softball Tournament on Saturday when they take on the University of Dallas at 11 a.m. and Huntingdon at 4 p.m. All games will be played at LeTourneau University in Longview.
