Softball's Peters, Richardson to Face Team USA
June 25, 2008
KILLEEN, Texas – On Wednesday evening, Lindsay Peters and ‘Roo Richardson of the University of Texas at Tyler softball team will receive an opportunity very few softball players ever receive. On Wednesday, Peters and Richardson will be part of an American Softball Association regional All-Star team that will face the USA National softball team in Killeen.
The game is part Team USA’s “Bound 4 Beijing” tour in preparation for the September’s 2008 Summer Olympics in the Chinese city. The tour is reminiscent of the old baseball barnstorming days, with the National Team traveling to 46 cities playing college teams, other national teams and regional all-star teams. The team is currently 49-1 on the tour.
While Peters and Richardson will be the only two Patriots on the roster, there will be no shortage of familiar faces on Team Texas. The team will be coached by University of Mary Hardin-Baylor head coach Kasey Blomquist and will be assisted by the Cru’s assistant coach Denise Lira.
Peters and Richardson are no strangers to Coach Blomquist, as the Patriots eliminated UMHB from this year’s ASC Softball tournament. Two weeks later, UMHB returned the favor by eliminating UT Tyler from the NCAA Regional.
While Blomquist and Lira will be heading up Team Texas, they will not be the Cru’s only representatives on the team. UMHB seniors Charlsie Cope, Kacie Kripner, Lindsey Liles, Katina Penter and Becca Ribera will all play on the team. The team will also include players from the University of Texas, Baylor, Sam Houston State and Texas State.
The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Wednesday night in Killeen and is sold out. For more information on the tour, as well as live stats from the game go to www.usasoftball.org.
