March 21, 2008
The good news keeps coming for The University of Texas at Tyler softball team.
After learning they were the unanimous No.1 team in NCAA Division III according to the NFCA poll released Friday, the Patriots swept a Friday afternoon doubleheader from Ozarks to improve to 20-0 on the season.
If that wasn’t enough, the NCAA informed UT Tyler officials Friday afternoon that the University has been selected to host a regional championship tournament May 8-12 at the UT Tyler Ballpark.
UT Tyler is one of eight sites selected, and the winners of the eight regional championships will advance to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship, scheduled for May 16-20, 2008, at the James I Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
A field of 59 teams will be selected and seeded by the NCAA for the postseason. The field consists of 35 conference champions from conference with automatic qualifiers and 24 teams given at-large berths by the NCAA.
The UT Tyler regional will consist of either seven or eight teams.
This is the first NCAA event that UT Tyler has been selected to host.
Linfield College, located in McMinnville, Ore., is the defending national champion.
