A
beautifully landscaped area around the courts includes a grass
seating area built into the hillside adjacent to the courts.
The park-like atmosphere at the tennis center creates and environment
that is conducive to competition. Low fencing around the north
sides of the courts -with appropriate netting - allow spectators
a great view of matchess in-progress. The center court has a
stadium atmosphere to it and allows for over 400 people to watch
the matches.
A clubhouse
next to the courts with a staff offices, storage space, and
tournament offices was donated by Betty and Dick Summers in
1986. The center, named after the Summers, continues to be
one of the finest collegiate tennis facilities in the country.
The Summers Tennis Center received the USTA facility of the
year award in 1988 has been upgraded and improved to maintain
system standards. The facility boasts: indoor and outdoor rest-rooms
and waterfountains, office space, storage, club house area
for players, fully hard wired for internet access to accommodate
tournament level play.
North of
the tennis courts, behind the viewing area for tennis, is the
Jim and Bonna Bess Vaughn Recreation and Therapy Pool and Fitness
Area, part of the Herrington Patriot Center. The heated pool features a zero grade beach entry, two-lane
lap pool, and bubble couch. The clover shaped spa seat 30 people
and features jet sprays with a water temperature average of
100 degrees. The sundeck will be a place for students to relax
and do homework and enjoy each others company.
