Tennis Teams Clinch Share of East Division Title
April 8, 2008
PINEVILLE, La. -- The University of Texas at Tyler men's and women's tennis teams shutout the Louisiana College tennis teams on Tuesday afternoon in Pineville, 9-0. With the wins, both teams clinch at least a share of the American Southwest Conference East Division title. This will be the men's fifth consecutive East Division crown and will be the third straight championship for the women.
The win also earns the women the right to hold the 2008 ASC Men’s & Women’s Tennis Championships. The right to host the championship is awarded this year to the women’s East Division champion. The tournaments will take place April 18-20 at the Summers Tennis Center on the campus of UT Tyler. The top three teams from each division in men’s and women’s will compete in a six-team single elimination tournament.
“This is a great honor for both our teams and our University,” said head coach Chris Bizot. “Our facilities make us a great fit to host the tournament and it is great to give our seniors one more chance to play at home.”
In the matches, both teams made easy work of Louisiana, with the men posting 10 shutout sets and the women posting 11. Both teams took down the Wildcats in straight sets.
Junior Rachel Anders (Lindale, Texas), junior Beth Launius (LaGrange, Texas), freshman Michelle Hagler (Austin, Texas), sophomore Brittany Ude (Corpus Christi, Texas), junior Steven Campbell (San Angelo, Texas), senior Will McDonald (Houston, Texas), and senior Bryan Jolly (Houston, Texas) all defeated their opponents in perfect 6-0, 6-0 matches.
The wins advance the Patriot men to 14-6 overall and 4-0 in the ASC, while the women improve to 14-3 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.
UT Tyler will close out their regular season on Friday in Richardson, Texas, when they take on UT Dallas at 3 p.m.
