Tennis Notches Three Shutouts in Mississippi

JACKSON/CLINTON, Miss. – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s tennis teams combined for three shutout wins against Millsaps, Belhaven, and Mississippi College on Thursday.

In Jackson, the men’s team took on simultaneous opponents for the second time in two days. One team of Patriots, led by top flight junior Dustin Phillips (Houston, Texas) blanked Millsaps 9-0, while another team of Patriots, led by senior Bryan Jolly (Houston, Texas), took down Belhaven, 7-0. The wins were the first for UT Tyler since having its six-game win streak snapped by Division I Jackson St., on Wednesday. The men’s team now stands at 8-2 on the year and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference Eastern Division play.

Meanwhile, in Clinton, the women’s side opened their conference season with a 9-0 shutout of Mississippi College. The women have now won seven matches in a row, with six of the wins being shutouts. On the year, the women’s team is now 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the ASC East.

The women will now travel to Birmingham, Ala., where they will take on Birmingham-Southern on Friday, March 7 at 12 p.m. The men will now take a week off before traveling to Claremont, Calif., to compete in the Stag-Hen Invitational. The two-day event is hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and will feature some of the top men’s tennis teams in Division III. On March 13, the Patriots will take on No. 17 Carnegie Mellon, followed by co-host, No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 14.
