Patriots Sweep Weekly Tennis Honors
March 12, 2008
RICHARDSON, Texas -- Freshman Robert Sajovich (Austin, Texas) and senior Nicole Barrett (Allen, Texas) were both named East Division Tennis Player of the Week by the American Southwest Conference on Wednesday afternoon. This is the second week in a row a Patriot woman has won the honor and the first of the season for the men.
Sajovich went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play on the week, helping lead the Patriots to wins over Millsaps and division rival Mississippi College. For the week, Sajovich shutout his opponent in four of six games played. Sajovich has a season individual record of 5-1 and a season doubles record of 6-0 with partner Steven Campbell (San Angelo, Texas).
On the women’s side, senior Nicole Barrett had a banner week, going 5-0 in singles and 4-1 in doubles. Barrett’s only blemish came when she and partner Michelle Hagler (Austin, Texas) fell to No. 27 Washington-St. Louis, 8-6. However, Barrett did pick up one of three wins for the Patriots against Washington by beating the Bear’s No. 4, 3-6, 6-2, 10-6. Barrett is currently 10-1 in single action for the season, winning her last 10 matches. Barrett has not lost a singles match since her season opener on February 17. In doubles play, Barrett and partner Hagler, last week’s ASC East Player of the Week, have posted a 8-2 record on the year.
The men’s team will next travel to Claremont, Calif., to compete in the 2008 Stag-Hen Invitational. The Patriots will take on No. 17 Carnegie Mellon on Thursday and hosts, No. 5, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday.
The women will continue to rest until March 22, when both teams will return home to take on Rhodes at the Summers Tennis Center.
