Golden Gusties Eliminate Men’s Tennis from NCAAs

ST. PETER, Minn. – The 25th ranked University of Texas at Tyler men’s tennis team fell in the regional finals to regional hosts, No. 6 Gustavus Adolphus, 5-0.
The Patriots fell behind early in the match and were swept in doubles for the first time since their match with Washington-St. Louis last season on April 14, 2007.
The Golden Gusties needed just two victories in singles action to win the match and advance to the NCAA Championship round in Lewiston, Maine on May 13-18.
Gustavus No. 2 John Kauss defeated UT Tyler freshman Robert Sajovich (Austin, Texas), 6-0, 6-3 for the fourth point.
The Gusties picked up the match winning point when the six-flight Kevin Stickney defeated Patriot sophomore Nick Kreines (Houston, Texas), 6-3, 6-2.
Despite the loss, junior Dustin Phillips (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Dustin Ashlock (Arlington, Texas) were leading their respective opponents when the match reached a decision.
UT Tyler finished their 2008 campaign at 18-7, winning the 2008 ASC Championship and picking up a NCAA tournament win in the process.
