Fenter, Kreines Win Doubles Crown at ITA Regionals

RICHARDSON, Texas – Seniors Brad Fenter (Vernon, Texas) and Nick Kreines (Houston, Texas) of The University of Texas at Tyler men’s tennis team beat Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal of Trinity (Tex.), 4-6, 6-4, 11-9, to claim the doubles championship of the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional at Texas-Dallas in Richardson on Monday.
Fenter and Kreines will now advance to the 2009 National Small College Championships on Oct. 14-18 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. The duo’s first game in Mobile will be on Oct. 14 in a play-in game for the Division III bracket with the winners of the Northwest Regional.
For winning, Fenter and Kreines will also be named as men’s tennis All-Americans by the ITA at the conclusion of the 2010 spring season.
In other doubles action, senior David Ashlock (Arlington, Texas) and sophomore Andrew Reznik (Southlake, Texas) also made it to the semifinals of the 64-team draw, but lost to Cocanougher and Kowal, 6-1, 7-6 (9).
In the singles bracket, Ashlock and sophomores Adam Chirhart (Austin, Texas) and Joshua Chavez (Harlingen, Texas) each advanced to the quarterfinals of the 128-player draw, but all fell to opponents from Trinity.
On Friday, the UT Tyler women’s team will travel to San Antonio, Texas to play in their ITA Southwest Regional hosted by Trinity. Last year, junior Michelle Hagler (Austin, Texas) and former Patriot Beth Launius won the regional doubles championships and finished sixth in the Division III bracket at the National Small College Championships.
