The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team opened American Southwest Conference play with a solid 3-0 victory over LeTourneau before a crowd of 427 at the Herrington Patriot Center Tuesday. UT Tyler (5-4, 1-0) combined for 18 kills in the first game and 48 overall while exploding for 10 service aces and 64 total digs. Kala Laningham led all players with 12 kills and Jessica Lightfoot had four service aces. Tami Trail led the Patriots with 11 digs followed by Ashley Winter’s ten. “Our girls respect LeTourneau, so we felt like we had to come out and play strong,” said UT Tyler volleyball coach Rachel Short. “Every single player did well tonight and we feel really good about opening conference play with a big win.” Jennifer McCool led LeTourneau (1-7, 0-1) with eight of the team’s 26 kills and Juliana Metcalf had 13 digs for the Lady Jackets. UT Tyler will travel to Conway, Ark. for a tri-match on Saturday before returning home next Wednesday to face Texas Wesleyan in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. in the Herrington Patriot Center.
