UTD Gets Better Of Volleyball in ASC Opener
September 16, 2008

The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team (6-4, 0-1 ASC) opened up the American Southwest Conference portion of its schedule against East Division rival UT Dallas (8-3, 1-0 ASC) on Tuesday night at the Herrington Patriot Center.

However, the match was not the sort of ASC debut the Patriots had hoped for as the Comets swept UT Tyler, 25-21, 25-18, 25-15, in three straight games. UT Dallas’ win marked the seventh victory in the 10-match series for the Comets.

The Patriots had a slow evening offensively, recording just 23 kills with 19 errors off of 111 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .036. Comparatively, UT Dallas notched 33 kills with 14 errors off of 94 total attacks for an attack percentage of .202.

Defensively, the two teams were more even with UT Tyler totaling 46 digs and 4.0 total blocks, while UT Dallas had 53 digs and 5.0 total blocks.

Junior Lana Low (Quitman, Texas) led UT Tyler in kills on the evening with six, and ended the match with an attack percentage of .250.

A major contributor to the Patriots’ cause was Junior Cristy Meredith (Amarillo, Texas), who accounted for half of the Patriots 18 total set assists in the match. Her counterpart at setter, sophomore Whitney Clement (Flint, Texas), had six assists on the night.

Defensively, senior Megan McCarty (Kaufman, Texas) led her team in digs with nine, while sophomores Kelsey Winn (Tyler, Texas) and Aerial Longino (Alvarado, Texas) had one block solo and one block assist each.

The Patriots will continue ASC East play on Friday night at the Herrington Patriot Center when they take on East Texas Baptist at 7 p.m.
