Volleyball Snaps Three Game Skid With ASC First Win
September 20, 2008
After two unsuccessful attempts, The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team (7-5, 1-2 ASC) finally got its first American Southwest Conference win of the season on Saturday at the Herrington Patriot Center. The Patriots took down Mississippi College (7-5, 1-3 ASC) three sets to one, 23-25, 30-28, 25-16, 25-12.
The victory was seventh of the season for UT Tyler, which ties last year’s number of wins, just 12 matches into the 2008 campaign.
In set one, UT Tyler jumped out to an early lead, but allowed the Choctaws to get back in to the set and put the Patriots on the brink of a 0-1 deficit. UT Tyler would attempt to rally, but would fall short and lose the opening set.
In the second set, the Patriots once again jumped out to an early lead, only to have Mississippi come back and force the set into extra points. Although it would take five set points, UT Tyler would persevere to even the match up at one set apiece.
In sets three and four, it would be all UT Tyler. The Patriots committed just five hitting errors over the two set span and posted a .500 attack percentage in set number four.
Freshman Danika Waldrep (Arlington, Texas) recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. Waldrep, along with freshman Liz Bartelson (Burlington, Wis.), also found great success from the service line, as each had four aces on the day.
Meanwhile, sophomore Whitney Clements (Flint, Texas) and junior Cristy Meredith (Amarillo, Texas) combined for 38 of the Patriots’ 39 assists in the match.
UT Tyler’s all-time digs leader, senior Megan McCarty (Kaufman, Texas), once again showed how she earned that title by posting her fourth 20 plus dig match of the season.
The Patriots will now rest for seven days before closing out a four-match home stand on Sept. 27 in a non-conference duel with the University of Dallas. Match time at the Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
