Volleyball Picked 3rd in ASC Preseason Poll

RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team was picked to finish third in the East Division of the American Southwest Conference during the 2009 season according to the league’s annual poll of head coaches and sports information directors that was released on Monday.

The Patriots finished last season in third place and ended the year with a 13-17 overall record and a 7-10 record in league play. They then advanced to the ASC Tournament for the first-time in program history where they lost a five-set heartbreaker to Hardin-Simmons.

UT Tyler finished the polling behind defending ASC Champion Texas-Dallas in first place and East Texas Baptist in second place.

Finishing behind the Patriots in the East were Mary Hardin-Baylor in fourth, Mississippi College in fifth and LeTourneau in sixth.

In the West, defending ASC West champions Texas Lutheran edged out Hardin-Simmons to take first in that division, while McMurry followed at third. Schriener and Howard Payne were next in line at fourth and fifth, while Concordia (Tex.) and Sul Ross rounded out the poll at sixth and seventh, respectively.

In the preseason awards, Texas-Dallas’ Nikki Calverley and Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Erin Maenius were named Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, in the East, while Kaela Parnell of Hardin-Simmons and Sarah Anding of McMurry took home their respective Offensive and Defensive preseason awards in the West.

The UT Tyler Patriots will open their 2009 campaign on Sept. 4-5 when they host the 2009 UT Tyler/Trinity Mother Frances Classic at the Herrington Patriot Center.
