Volleyball Opens Crossover With Loss to Howard Payne

The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team lost its opening game of the first of two American Southwest Conference crossovers this season, 3-0, to Howard Payne on Friday night at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Yellow Jackets (6-9, 4-3) started the match strong and took the first set, 25-12. In the second set, the Patriots attempted to fight back but eventually fell, 25-23.

In the third set, UT Tyler (6-9, 1-5) attempted a late rally but it was not enough, as the Yellow Jackets completed the sweep with a 25-20 win.

Junior Kelsey Winn (Tyler, Texas) led the Patriots offensively in the match with 12 kills and a service ace.

Defensively, freshman Hillary Taylor (Lewisville, Texas) led the way in the digs category with 12, while sophomore Amanda Hanson (Spring, Texas) recorded a team-high four block assists.

UT Tyler will return to the Herrington Patriot Center on Saturday to close out the crossover by taking on McMurry at Noon, followed by Hardin-Simmons at 5 p.m.
