Volleyball Splits Day One of Austin College Classic

SHERMAN, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team went 1-1 on the opening day of the 2009 Austin College Classic in Sherman, Texas on Friday.
In the first match of the day, the Patriots (3-3) made quick work of Jarvis Christian by dispatching the Bulldogs in three straight games, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20.
In each game, Jarvis (0-8) kept pace with the Patriots until the final few points when UT Tyler’s experience in high-scoring matches helped guide them to three-straight wins over the scrappy Bulldog squad.
Freshman Stephanie Pupenbroke (Carrollton, Texas) and sophomore Amanda Hanson (Spring, Texas) led UT Tyler offensively in the match with seven kills each. Junior Kelsey Winn (Tyler, Texas) also had big match, as she recorded six kills and three service aces, including the match winning point.
Junior Whitney Clements (Flint, Texas) continued to excel in her role as setter, by assisting in 21 of the Patriots’ 36 kills in the match.
Defensively for UT Tyler, freshman libero Hillary Taylor (Lewisville, Texas) led the Patriots with 12 digs, while Winn followed closely with nine.
In the second match, the Patriots took on host Austin College (8-1) in the final match of the evening. UT Tyler struggled to find answers for the Kangaoos’ offense and fell in three straight games, 25-17, 25-5 and 25-16.
Sophomore Danika Waldrep (Arlington, Texas) and Hanson led the Patriot offense in the match with five kills each, while Taylor led the defense with 16 digs.
The Patriots will close out play in the Austin College Classic on Saturday when they take on Berry at 11 a.m., followed by Ouachita Baptist at 3 p.m.
