Kristee PhelpsKristee Phelps enters her second year as head coach at the University of Texas at Tyler, looking to build on last season’s fourth place finish in the ASC for her Patriots.

Phelps began her career in West Texas, and in her first year in the Piney Woods, the Patriots notched their first-ever wins against NCAA ranked opponents, beating the #20 (Austin College) and #25 (Texas Lutheran University)  teams. The Patriots finished 10-8, in fourth place in the ASC East and 13-16 overall. Five of her players were named to All-Conference teams.

Her second year at the helm of the Patriots, the team improved to third in the ASC, and would have been a playoff team if eligible. The Patriots finished 12-18, 9-8 in ASC play.

Before coming to Tyler, Phelps was head volleyball coach at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas. She led the Pioneers to three Sooner Athletic Conference tournaments, and one Region VI tournament appearance. Prior to taking over the program, Phelps was also a four-year starter for the Pioneers, setting career records for service aces (174) and kill attempts (4229). She was also first all-time on WBU’s records for kills (1507) and digs (1364) when her career concluded, but saw her records passed during her time as head coach there. She was a three-time NAIA All-Region selection. While playing at WBU, Phelps led the Pioneers to two conference championships and her team advanced to the NAIA regional tournament three times.

During her time at WBU, Phelps coached 19 All-Conference players, six NAIA All-Region selections and one NAIA All-American.

Prior to returning to Wayland Baptist as head coach, Phelps served as head volleyball and girls’ track coach at Bynum High School. She has also coached the Amarillo Elite Volleyball Club.

Phelps has her Masters of Science in Sports and Exercise Science from West Texas A&M University, and her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Wayland Baptist University. She attended high school at Amarillo High, and won the 5A State Volleyball Championship in 1994.
