Patriots Picked to Repeat, Stanley Named Top ASC Player
October 18, 2006

In the preseason polls, the University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball team was picked to repeat as ASC East Division champions, while senior Sarah Stanley was chosen to repeat her honor as ASC East Division Player of the Year.

The Patriots, who finished last year tied for first in the East with Mississippi College, are looking for their third straight East Division title.

“It’s quite an honor,” Patriots coach Terri Deike said. “Of course, with that honor comes a great responsibility to live up to. We've worn the target for a couple of years now.”

In a poll taken of the conference’s coaches, Sports Information Directors, and media members, UT Tyler finished a single point ahead of Mississippi College. The Patriots received eight of 17 first-place votes and 105 points, while the Lady Choctaws received five first-place votes and 104 points.

Third-place pick ETBU received two first-place votes, finishing with 90 points. The rest of the poll showed UT Dallas (48 points) in fourth place, Ozarks (47 points) in fifth, Louisiana College (46 points, two first-place votes) in sixth, and LeTourneau University (36 points) in seventh.

“The stakes are definitely raised for us,” Deike says. “With our first class of graduating seniors, for their sake we have to live up to that number one ranking.”

One of those seniors, Sarah Stanley (SR/Rockwall, TX) was chosen as ASC East Preseason Player of the Year. Stanley also won the ASC East Player of the Year award last season, when she led the Patriots to a share of the division championship while tallying 18.6 points and 4.56 assists a game. Stanley scored in double figures in twenty-three of her twenty-five games, and was the league’s top free throw shooter, hitting 81.7 percent from the stripe (89 of 109).

The Patriots begin their season November 20, with a home game against Jarvis.
