Women's Basetball Survives Late UMHB Rally for Win
December 15, 2007

The University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball staved off a late rally by Mary Hardin Baylor (2-2, 2-1 ASC) on Saturday afternoon to get the 79-72 home victory. The Patriots (6-1, 4-0 ASC) are off to the best start in program history.

The Patriots, who never trailed in the game, led by as may as 20 points in the first half and led 41-27 at the break. At the beginning of the second half, it looked like more of the same for the Patriots as they jumped out to a 25 point lead less than eight minutes into the period. However, the Lady Cru was not prepared to go quietly as it went on a 13-5 run in the middle of the half. With just 4:42 left in the game the Patriots were up 77-56 and looked to put the Lady Cru away for good, but Mary Hardin-Baylor would battle back one more time. The Lady Cru ended the game on a 16-2 run, but it was UT Tyler who picked up the 79-72 win.

Freshman Marci Trogus (Houston, Texas) led all scorers with 15 points, while senior Kasey Buggs (Lake Dallas, Texas) led all rebounders with seven. Buggs and the freshman trio of Lindsay Eaton (Austin, Texas), Melissa Thomas (Austin, Texas) and LaTiandra Smith (Jacksonville) were the other four of the five Patriots who scored in double digits with 14, 13, 12 and 11, respectively. Sophomore Kellie Thomas (New Braunfels, Texas) came off the bench to lead Mary Hardin-Baylor with 14 points.

UT Tyler will return to the Herrington Patriot Center on Monday evening to host ASC West foe Concordia (Tex.). The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
