Basketball Teams Return to Non-Conference Play, Prep for League Action
November 22, 2007
With the Thanksgiving break behind them, the UT Tyler men’s and women’s basketball teams return to action this weekend, hoping to get some valuable playing time in before American Southwest Conference play heats up in December.
Both teams will begin ASC play with road games Dec. 1 at Texas Lutheran followed by Schreiner on Dec. 3.
Women
With just one game under their belts, the UT Tyler women will look to work out any kinks this weekend during the Southwestern-Austin College Classic in Georgetown, Texas.
UT Tyler will play Austin College at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by Southwestern on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Patriots (1-0) are coming off a 69-68 home win over LSU-Shreveport last Saturday. In that game, UT Tyler led by as many as 19 in the second half before a late run by LSUS evened the game, forcing the Patriots to the free-throw line to squeak out the win. UT Tyler’s only senior, Kasey Buggs, led the Patriots with 20 points, followed by freshman Lindsay Eaton with 16.
Austin College is 1-2 on the season, coming off a 62-58 loss to Texas-Dallas on Tuesday. Katy Williams had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the ‘Roos in both categories. As a team, Austin College is averaging 68.3 points per game.
Men
The UT Tyler men will play LSU-Shreveport at 3 p.m. Saturday in Shreveport.
Last time out, the Patriots suffered a 65-49 loss to Division 1 McNeese State on Tuesday.
UT Tyler will have its hands full with an undefeated LSUS (5-0) squad that is averaging 94.6 points over their five wins. The Pilots are also out-rebounding their opponents, 52 to 39. Josh Porter is leading LSUS with 21 points per game.
The Patriots (1-2) picked up their only win so far on Nov. 17 with a 72-64 victory over Emory at the Sewanee tournament. Through their first three games, UT Tyler is averaging just under 64 points per game. Junior Anthony Reese is the only UT Tyler player averaging double-digits, hitting for 16.3 points on average. Patrick Branche is next closest with 9.3 points per game.
Both UT Tyler teams return home Dec. 15 for a two-game homestand.
