Women's Basketball Predicted to Finish in Second Place
October 17, 2007

The American Southwest Conference released its preseason women’s basketball poll Wednesday and The University of Texas Tyler is picked to finish in second place in the conference’s East Division according to the conference’s head coaches, sports information directors, and media representatives

The Patriots, who finished last season in second place with a 14-6 ASC, were 17-8 overall in 2006-2007.

Under fifth-year head coach Terri Deike, the Patriots received 112 points in the poll and two first place votes, finishing only behind East Texas Baptist.

East Texas Baptist received sixteen first place votes to earn the top spot, just 29 points in front of the Patriots.

In the West Division, Howard Payne finished first in the voting, with Hardin Simmons and McMurry rounding out that division’s top three.

The 2007-2008 season marks the first time the Patriots will be eligible to advance to the conference and NCAA tournaments.  While still provisional members of the conference, UT Tyler won ASC East Division championships in 04-05 and 05-06.

UT Tyler begins practice today and the Patriots open their season Nov. 17 with a home game against LSU – Shreveport.  Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the Herrington Patriot Center.
