#8 McMurry Slips by Patriot Women
January 10, 2008
Despite trailing for the majority of the second half, the eighth-ranked McMurry women’s basketball team squeaked by the University of Texas at Tyler on Thursday night at the Herrington Patriot Center, 81-78.
The Patriots, who led by as many 12 points, ran into a cold spell in the final five minutes of the game going one-for-five from the floor and committing four turnovers. McMurry ended the game on a 14-2 run.
Freshman Melissa Thomas (Austin, Texas) led all scorers in the game with 20 points, while fellow freshman Marci Trogus (Houston, Texas) followed closely behind with 18. Freshman Lindsay Eaton (Austin, Texas) rounded out UT Tyler players in double-digits with 12. Senior Kasey Buggs (Lake Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Becky Taylor (New Caney, Texas) both ended the game just shy of a double-double as each had 9 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Maigen Sawyer (Hamlin, Texas) led McMurry with 18 points.
With the loss the Patriots fall to 7-5 on the season and 4-3 in conference action, while McMurry improves to 10-1 on the year and stays unbeaten in the American Southwest Conference at 7-0.
UT Tyler will return to their home court on Saturday afternoon when they host Hardin-Simmons at the Herrington Patriot Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
