January 28, 2008
RICHARDSON, Texas--- The University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball team picked up a key road win on Monday night in Richardson by defeating Texas-Dallas, 75-68. The win keeps the Patriots atop the standings in the East Division of the American Southwest Conference by two games.
Despite leading for most of the game, UT Tyler had trouble putting the Comets away. The Patriots led by 13 points with just under 10 minutes to play in the game, but had trouble stopping a 15-5 run by UT Dallas to lead by just three with :55 seconds left in the contest. However, a late basket by senior Kasey Buggs (Lake Dallas, Texas) and a pair of free throws by freshman Lindsay Eaton (Austin, Texas) sealed the victory for UT Tyler and gave them the seven point victory.
Buggs notched her second double-double in as many games and fourth of the year as she led the Patriots with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Melissa Thomas (Austin, Texas) followed Buggs with 23 points. Sophomore Becky Taylor (New Caney, Texas) tied Buggs in the rebounding category as she also had 11 rebounds, while freshman Marci Trogus (Houston, Texas) had a well-rounded night with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Chelsea Edwards (Friendswood, Texas) led the Comets with 15 points.
With the win the UT Tyler improves to 11-7 overall and 8-5 in the ASC East, while UT Dallas falls to 10-8 on the year and 6-7 in league play.
The Patriots will return home on Thursday evening when they host Ozarks at the Herrington Patriot Center. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
