#22 UT Dallas Tops Women's Basketball in OT
February 12, 2009
RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler women's basketball team forced one of the nation's top teams into overtime but couldn't put a run together in the extra period and fell, 90-83, to No. 22 UT Dallas on Thursday night at the UTD Activity Center.
Neither team was able to put together a sustained lead during regulation and the night saw the score tied 15 times. UT Tyler's (14-8, 11-6) largest lead of the first half came at 10:38 on a layup by Marci Trogus that put the Patriots up, 23-15, but that lead disentigrated quickly thanks to a 12-2 run by UT Dallas that gave the Lady Comets a two point edge with 6:52 left.
UTD (20-3, 17-1) hit two big three's just before the break to take a 37-35 lead into halftime.
Both teams traded baskets for the majority of the second half until the Patriots went on an 8-0 run to lead 71-63 with 2:42 remaining and appeared to be headed for victory.
UT Dallas, however, staged a late rally and outscored the Patriots 9-1 in the final two and a half minutes to force the extra time.
Lyndsey Smith posted a game-high 27 for UT Dallas while Lindsay Eaton topped the Patriots' score book with 26.
In what has become routine, UT Tyler's Becky Taylor had 17 points and 15 rebounds for her 19th double-double of the season. Trogus also doubled-up for the Patriots with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Marzetta Shepard added 16 points.
The win for the Lady Comets means UT Dallas clinches at least a share of the American Southwest Conference East Division title. UT Tyler remains in third place and has already clinched a playoff spot.
UT Tyler plays at Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark., on Saturday.
