Women’s Basketball Falls at LC; Taylor Breaks ASC Record

PINEVILLE, La. - A second half surge by Louisiana College was enough to lift the Lady ‘Cats by The University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball team, 76-68, on Thursday night at the H. O. West Fieldhouse in Pineville.

Despite the loss, UT Tyler junior Becky Taylor (Bullard, Texas) was one of two American Southwest Conference Players to break the league’s single-season rebound record on Thursday night.

Taylor entered the evening with 305 rebounds, while Hardin-Simmons sophomore Lindsay Newcombe went into her game against Schreiner with 303. Taylor ended her night with 10 rebounds, while Newcombe recorded 12.

Both players ended their respective games with 315 rebounds on the year, which was more than enough to surpass the previous record of 305 set by LeTourneau’s Sara Vestfals during the 2001-2002 season.

In the first half of UT Tyler’s game with Louisiana, the Patriots (15-9, 12-7) steadily built their lead throughout the half and led by eight with less than a minute to play.

However, Louisiana (16-8, 12-8) mounted a comeback and cut the lead to two at the break.

In the second half, the Lady ‘Cats capitalized on the momentum they had in the waning seconds of the first half to push on and pick up the pivotal late season win.

Taylor finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her 21st double-double of the season. Sophomore Kamryn Hall (Henderson, Texas) finished just shy of her own double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Senior Marzetta Shepard (Atlanta, Texas) and sophomore Marci Trogus (Houston, Texas) rounded out the four UT Tyler players in double digits with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Patriots will close out their 2008-2009 regular season when they take on Mississippi College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Clinton.
