CLINTON, Miss. – The University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball team fell in its final game of the 2008-2009 regular season, 77-66, to Mississippi College on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
In the first half, the Patriots (15-10, 12-8) took complete control of the game and jumped out to 10 point lead midway through the period. However, despite UT Tyler holding the lead for the entire half, Mississippi (22-3, 17-3) was able to cut the lead to just one at the intermission.
In the second half, the Choctaws clamped down on defense and limited UT Tyler to just 19 shots from the floor and six made baskets in the stanza.
Mississippi took over the lead with the first basket of the half and never relinquished it.
Senior Marzetta Shepard (Atlanta, Texas) led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Sophomore Lindsay Eaton (Austin, Texas) followed Shepard with 16 points, while sophomore Marci Trogus (Houston, Texas) added 11.
Junior Becky Taylor (Bullard, Texas) scored 12 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for her 22nd double-double of the year. Taylor is now tied for fourth on the NCAA Division III single-season double-double list.
Senior Rosemary Green led five Mississippi players in double digits with 18 points.
The Patriots will now look towards Friday’s opening-round game in the 2009 ASC Championship tournament. UT Tyler, the four-seed from the East, will take on the No. 1 seed from the West and tournament host McMurry on Friday night at 8 p.m., in Abilene.
