Women’s Basketball to Host Fred Jacoby Classic

On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22, The University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball team will host the Inaugural Fred Jacoby I-20 Tip-Off Classic at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The event is being held in conjunction with UT Dallas, who is hosting a men’s tournament on the same days. Hosting duties will alternate between UT Tyler and UT Dallas every year.

The other two teams participating in this year’s women’s tournament are Wisconsin-Platteville and 20th-ranked St. Benedict of Minnesota.

UT Dallas will open play in the classic on Friday at 3:30 p.m., when they take on UW Platteville. At 5:30 p.m., the Patriots will play their first home game of the 2008-2009 season against St. Benedict.

On Saturday, UT Tyler will face Platteville at 1:00 p.m., followed by St. Benedict versus UT Dallas at 3:00 p.m.

In Richardson, the UT Tyler men will take on Guilford (N.C.) on Friday and LSU-Shreveport on Saturday. Both games are at 5:30 p.m.

The dual tournaments are named in honor of late American Southwest Conference Commissioner Fred Jacoby. Jacoby served as a commissioner at all three levels of NCAA competition and spent more than 35 years devoting his life to intercollegiate athletics.

Eight current conference commissioners, including ASC head Amy Carlton, served under Jacoby during his career. Jacoby passed away in March of 2008 after a bout with multiple myeloma.
