Fourth Place Finish Predicted for Women’s Basketball
October 21, 2009

The University of Texas at Tyler women’s basketball team was picked fourth in the East Division of the American Southwest Conference according to the league’s annual poll of its head coaches, sports information directors and local media outlets that was released on Wednesday.

The Patriots received 89 points in the poll and finished just four points behind third place Louisiana College. Defending East Division champions Texas-Dallas were picked to repeat by beating out second place Mississippi College by just one point.

East Texas Baptist followed the Patriots in fifth place with 75 points, while LeTourneau and Ozarks (Ark.) rounded out the poll in sixth and seventh places, respectively.

In the west, Hardin-Simmons claimed first place by beating out two-time defending ASC Champion Howard Payne by eight points.

In the individual awards, juniors Tillisha Givens of Louisiana and Lindsey Newcombe of Hardin-Simmons were tabbed as the top players heading into the new season for the East and West Divisions, respectively.

The 2009-2010 Patriots will take to the court for the first time on Nov. 20 against Howard-Payne as part of the 2009 Fred Jacoby I-20 Classic hosted by The University of Texas at Dallas.
