Patriots Clobber Concordia 5-0, Finish Third In ASC

The Patriots women’s soccer team beat Concordia 5-0 Saturday, winding up their season in third place in the American Southwest Conference.

The University of Texas at Tyler (12-4-1, 10-2-1) got two first half goals from Jorden Reed (JR/Keller, TX) to take the lead, and followed that with second-half goals for Leigh Garner (SR/Mesquite, TX), Cathe Armstrong (FR/Rowlett, TX), and Jana Cruce (SR/League City, TX).

Cruce’s goal was a special moment for the team. On a day where the seniors were honored, Cruce left her normal spot on the back line to play forward and scored her first goal (audio) in her four years with the Patriots. While serving as the Patriots consummate defender, Cruce had played in 67 games for UT Tyler before registering her first goal.

“She’s been an anchor for us,” Patriots coach Stefani Webb said, laughing. “She’s been a great captain and an anchor on and off the field and we wanted to reward her today.”

Dausha Hudack (JR/Irving, TX) had three assists in the game, finishing the year with a team-high seven. She also led all Patriots with 19 points. Cara Janton (SR/Little Rock, AR) led the team with seven goals.

The time in goal was split between Kristin Robertson (SO/Tyler, TX) and Lauren Hufham (FR/.Arlington, TX). Neither had to make a save as UT Tyler’s outstanding defense held the Tornados without a shot in the game. The Patriots had 45 shots, 19 of those on goal.

With the win, the Patriots finish the season in third place in the American Southwest Conference, nudging Texas Lutheran by a single point. The Patriots were picked fourth in the conference’s preseason polls.

UT Tyler is finishing a four-year provisional status as members of the NCAA, and is not eligible for postseason competition. However, the Patriots would have qualified for the playoffs if eligible.
