RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler women’s soccer team has been picked to finish the 2009 season in third place according to Tuesday’s American Southwest Conference Preseason Poll.

The Patriots earned 339 points and two first-place votes in the annual poll, which is voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Texas-Dallas edged out the Patriots by 19 points to take second place, while six-time defending champion Hardin-Simmons finished the polling in first place with 23 of 28 first-place votes.

Rounding out the potential field for this year’s ASC Tournament was Mississippi College in fourth, Mary Hardin-Baylor in fifth and Texas Lutheran in sixth. Howard Payne and East Texas Baptist were next in line in seventh and eighth places, while Ozarks (Ark.) and LeTourneau came in at ninth and tenth, respectively.

Finishing out the poll in eleventh through fourteenth places were, in order, Concordia (Tex.), Schreiner, Louisiana College and McMurry.

In the preseason individual awards, Howard Payne sophomore forward Takenda Cotton took home the offensive award, while senior goalkeeper Christi Carr of Hardin-Simmons won the defensive honor.

The 2009 UT Tyler women’s soccer team will kick-off its season on Sept. 4 at home against Oklahoma Christian at 4 p.m. at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
