Strong 2nd Half Propels Women’s Soccer Past UMHB
October 3, 2009
The University of Texas at Tyler women’s soccer team used two late goals to hand Mary Hardin-Baylor its first American Southwest Conference loss of the season on Saturday at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex in Tyler.
The Patriots (7-3, 5-1) shot early and often on the day, but had trouble figuring out Mary Hardin-Baylor goalkeeper Allyson Sargeant. Sargeant saved 10 of the 12 shots the Patriots put on target on the match, however it was the two that got by her that helped end the Cru’s five-game ASC winning streak.
The Patriots finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute on a strike from sophomore Emily Bechdol (Cedar Hill, Texas) that proved to be the game-winning goal.
Just over ten minutes later, junior Lauren Thomas (College Station, Texas) closed the door on any comeback attempt by the Cru (6-3, 5-1) when she scored off of a pass from junior Lauren Pate (Katy, Texas) in the 80th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Fraser (Lindale, Texas) picked up her first solo shutout of the season and the 11th of her career in the match by turning away all three Mary Hardin-Baylor shots on goal.
The Patriots will look to extend their three-game win streak on Friday when they meet Texas Lutheran in Seguin at 1 p.m.
