Women’s Soccer Edged in Season Opener
September 4, 2009
The University of Texas at Tyler women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, in its season opener on Friday evening at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex off of a last minute goal from Oklahoma Christian’s Hope Heinen.
The Patriots were the first on the board in the contest as junior Ashley Crawford (Grand Prairie, Texas) scored the first goal of the season in the 24th minute to give UT Tyler an early 1-0 lead.
UT Tyler goalkeeper Morgan Dux (Hurst, Texas) made sure the score stayed 1-0 for the remainder of the half by saving four shots.
In the second half, Oklahoma Christian’s Callie White evened the score at one in the 63rd minute by sneaking a ball past Patriot goalkeeper Sam Fraser (Lindale, Texas).
Just when the game appeared headed to certain over time, Heinen sailed a ball over Fraser’s head with only 26 second remaining in regulation to clinch the win for the Eagles.
Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Allie Cofer also played a huge role in the comeback by saving eight of nine shots on goal in the game.
The win lifts Oklahoma Christian to 2-0 on the year, while UT Tyler falls to 0-1.
The Patriots will return to the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 6, when they host LSU-Shreveport at 6 p.m.
