Women’s Soccer Tops Unbeaten Southwestern
September 13, 2009

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler women’s soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sunday afternoon by beating previously undefeated Southwestern (Tex.), 2-1, at the Robert K. Moses Jr. Soccer Field in Georgetown.

In the first half, both teams created several opportunities to score but neither team was able to covert those opportunities into goals. In the 42nd minute, the Pirates (4-1) committed a foul inside the box that gave UT Tyler (2-2) a penalty kick opportunity and a chance to take the lead.

Junior Analiz Medina (Tyler, Texas) seized the opportunity for her team by beating the Southwestern goalie to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

After the break, the two teams went back to the defensive battle that they had played for most of the first half until the 81st minute when the Pirates’ Jillian Curran broke through the UT Tyler defense and scored a game-tying goal.

With the score tied the Patriots wasted little time in retaking the lead, as junior Lauren Thomas (College Station, Texas) scored the game-winning goal just 14 seconds after Curran’s equalizer.

Senior goalkeeper Sam Fraser (Lindale, Texas) kept her team in the contest by coming up with four saves on the day.

The Patriots will begin the American Southwest Conference portion of their 2009 slate on Thursday when they host Mississippi College at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex at 5:30 p.m.
