Women’s Soccer Edged by Hardin-Simmons
September 25, 2009
ABILENE, Texas – The Hardin-Simmons University women’s soccer team pushed its American Southwest Conference unbeaten streak to 109 games on Friday by squeaking out a 1-0 victory over The University of Texas at Tyler at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene.
The Patriots (4-3, 2-1) struggled on both ends of the pitch in the first half of the match, as they were outshot by the Cowgirls, 14-1 overall and 7-0 on goal.
Senior Sam Fraser (Lindale, Texas) kept her team in the contest by coming up with six saves in the first half and two in the second half.
However, it was the one goal that got by Fraser that ended up being the difference in the contest. In the 19th minute, Hardin-Simmons’ Taylor Thigpen fired a shot past Fraser off of a pass from Katie Kuykendall that proved to be all the offense the Cowgirls (5-1, 2-0) would need in the match.
In the second half, UT Tyler outshot its opponents, 5-4, and reduced Hardin-Simmons’ corner opportunities from six to one. However, the Patriots were not able to convert any of their shots into goals and fell to the Cowgirls for the eighth consecutive time.
On Saturday, the Patriots will travel to the other side of Abilene to continue ASC play against McMurry. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
