What Is A Campanile

A campanile (camp-uh-neé-lee) is a freestanding bell tower, and that's what we have at The University of Texas at Tyler. The Dub and B.J. Riter Millennium Carillon Tower and Plaza is one of the finest in the country.

Here are some more facts about bells and carillons:

  • A set of bells up to eight is called a chime; a set with nine to 22 is a peal; and a set of 23 or more covering at least two octaves in a chromatic scale is called a carillon.

  • The range of the scale of UT Tyler's 57-bell carillon is F below middle C-GG#, chromatic to D and four octaves above middle C.

  • For a certain size and shape, 536 pounds of bronze will yield a middle C bell; C one octave down requires about 5,000 pounds of bronze; and C one octave lower requires over 50,000 pounds.

  • The Riter Carillon's tonnage is 11,937 pounds.

  • The bronze metal used in bells is made up of about 78-80 percent copper and 22-20 percent tin.

  • The person who plays the carillon is called a carilloneur.
