THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT TYLER
Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP)

The University of Texas at Tyler participates in the statewide Joint Admissions Medical Program (JAMP). Highly qualified, economically disadvantaged students are encouraged to pursue medical education through this program. There are two programs and application procedures. Students applying to UT Tyler who are interested in attending medical school after receiving the baccalaureate degree may apply to the UT Tyler Pre-JAMP program. UT Tyler Pre-JAMP is designed to facilitate a student’s application to the Texas JAMP program. Any student interested in the State of Texas JAMP program may apply in the fall of their sophomore year.

Stipend: A student may apply for a stipend for each of the two freshman semesters (fall and spring) by submitting a UT Tyler Pre-JAMP application. Amounts of the stipend not used to cover direct educational expenses may be subject to federal income tax. Tutorial assistance may also be available for eligible students upon request.

Eligibility Requirements: All UT Tyler Pre-JAMP recipients:

Must be currently enrolled at the University of Texas at Tyler as an undergraduate student with a declared major and pursuing a pre-medical emphasis (see document Pre-Medical Emphasis).
Must be enrolled in at least twelve (12) semester credit hours the semester of the award.
Must be enrolled in at least one course applicable to the student’s major.
Must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 in all work attempted.
Must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 in all courses specified in the pre-medical emphasis.
Must attend scheduled advising sessions as a condition for continuation of stipend.

NOTE: The remainder of an award will be forfeited if course load drops below fifteen semester credit hours or if minimum GPA is not maintained. Also, missing any scheduled advising session may result in forfeiture of an award. Awards will be paid in four installments each semester towards the end of each of the following months: September, October, November, December (fall); January, February, March, and April (spring). The final stipend payment will be released only after verification of final course grades.

Application Requirements: Applicants must complete the UT Tyler admissions process and be admitted to the university.
Applicants must submit the following documentation to the UT Tyler Pre-JAMP Faculty Director (Dr. Cliff Boucher):

A completed UT Tyler Pre-JAMP application which includes letters of recommendation from:
    a high school counselor and
a high school teacher (science teacher preferred)

Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and qualify for Pell Grant eligibility through the Financial Aid Office.

A personal essay indicative of the applicant's educational and career goals as a physician.

Selection Criteria: In reviewing applications for this award, the reviewers (comprised of a committee of faculty and staff) will consider evidence of creativity, leadership, initiative, motivation, and other characteristics indicative of the applicant's potential as a pre-medical student and a contributor to society. Overall grade point average and grade point average in science and mathematics courses taken in high school are important factors to be used in evaluating applications. The applicant must have a score on the SAT or ACT of not less than the Texas state mean.

Scholastic awards, community service, extracurricular activities, professional experience, household income, first generation college student, responsibilities while attending school, and financial aid needs (must be PELL eligible) will contribute to the overall evaluation of the application.

Each applicant is required to submit recommendation letters and a personal essay. The recommendation letters should be prepared by a science teacher and a counselor who know the applicant well enough to provide insight into the applicant's qualities, abilities and potential as a pre-medical student. The personal essay is to be prepared by the applicant and should indicate the applicant's educational and career goals as a physician. It should also state in what ways the receipt of this award would impact the ability of the applicant to achieve future goals. These two portions of the application weigh heavily in the selection process.

Two UT Tyler Pre-JAMP awards are anticipated for the fall at the University of Texas at Tyler. A maximum of two students from UT Tyler may be selected by the statewide JAMP Council.

Submitting Application: The completed application, recommendation letters, and personal essay must be received by Dr. Boucher (see address below) no later than two weeks after the start of the fall semester. Letters of award notification will be mailed during the fall semester.
