The transition from Blackboard to Canvas will occur between November 2016 and May 2017. Blackboard will be fully supported through May 2017 when Canvas is turned on and Blackboard is retired. Faculty, students and support staff may expect the following transition:

Fall 2016

  • Course Migration Requests due by 5 p.m. Nov. 4.
  • Dec. 1 - Canvas is available for instructors.
  • Dec. 1 - faculty access to Canvas training and course preparation.

Spring 2017

  • Pilot Program with Educational Leadership begins.
  • Canvas trainings per college and department.
  • Organizations request Canvas migrations.
  • Faculty and instructional designers continue course preparations.
  • Student support and trainings offered.

Summer 2017

  • May 2017 - Canvas goes LIVE; Blackboard fully archived and retired.
  • Canvas trainings continue.

What Should Faculty Expect?

Faculty are highly encouraged to access Canvas 101 training and sandbox before accessing migrated course content in Canvas. All courses in Blackboard will be stored and can be retrieved in the future if needed.

Note: The Canvas team will be completing mass course migrations as requests are submitted. Migrated content will include materials, assignments, topics, syllabi, homepages, etc., but NO student work and data will be migrated.

Course content is migrated into a new migrated course site in Canvas, not the official registrar-created course site.

You should visit the migrated course content site in Canvas early and often to check formatting and course design before teaching your course in Canvas.

When you are satisfied with your course content site, and the official registrar course site is available, it's easy to copy the entire contents to your official course site.

For more information related to the migration to Canvas, check out the Migration Information page.
