ROADTRIP NATION
RoadTrip Nation is a national program and UT Tyler is recognized as a RoadTrip Nation Partner Campus. The program is geared toward college students who are interested in discovering what else is out there as related to careers and in creating their own path in life.
Here's how it all got started...In the fall of 2001, a group of recent college grads who had no idea what they wanted to do with their lives, decided to take a roadtrip to figure it out. The group roadtripped around the country for 15,000 miles in a 31 foot bright green RV, interviewing leaders from all walks of life simply to learn how they got to where they are today.
Over 80 interviews later, the group learned that building a life has nothing to do with conforming to society-based expectations. Finding your path in life is all about harnessing your individuality. Getting down to what is uniquely you. Everyone they interviewed built lives in line with this perspective -- why then is it not shared with a nation of young people striving to find their own roads in life?
To share this experience with their generation, the group filmed the entire roadtrip, in hope of making a grassroots documentary about the experience.
Shortly after returning from the debt-financed trip, an article ran in Forbes Magazine that shared the roadtrip story on a national level. Soon after, the group was approached to do a book with Random House, and sponsors like State Farm and Apple Computers stepped forward to support the production of the documentary for PBS.
The RoadTrip Nation program encourages students to conduct "explorational" interviews through involvement in the "Behind the Wheel" program and in their own community. As a partner campus, UT Tyler students are eligible to apply for the "Behind the Wheel” program, form and join a local campus student chapter, and access RoadTrip Nation resources (i.e. books and videos available in the Career Resource Library).
