COLLEGE
OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
DEPARTMENT
OF BIOLOGY
Don
Killebrew, Chair
The Department
of Biology offers the Master of Science in Biology, the Master of Science
in Mathematics, and participates in the Master of Arts and Master of Science
programs in Interdisciplinary Studies and Master of Arts in Teaching.
MASTER
OF ARTS AND MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES
The Master of Arts and the Master of Science degrees in interdisciplinary
studies emphasize study in a wider range of fields than is normally possible
in a program with a traditional major. The student s background and goals
are considered in the design of the individual degree plan.
A student may choose mathematics as one of the three required disciplines
for the Master of Arts. Biology, chemistry, computer science or mathematics
may be chosen as one of the three required disciplines for the Master
of Science. See the Interdisciplinary Studies degree program section of
this catalog for the degree requirements for the interdisciplinary studies
degree.
MASTER
OF SCIENCE IN BIOLOGY
The Department of Biology offers graduate studies leading to the degree
of master of science in biology and master of science in interdisciplinary
studies with an emphasis in biology. These programs are designed to provide
graduate education for students who intend to pursue vocations in industry,
government, teaching, and further graduate education leading to the doctorate.
The master of science program provides course work with an emphasis in
the following areas: 1) genetics, 2) physiological ecology, 3) ecology,
4) behavior, 5) biosystematics, and 6) herpetology, 7) entomology, 8)
biogeography, 9) ornithology, and 10) formal research with thesis. This
program is designed for students preparing for careers requiring analytical,
research, and problem solving skills.
The master of science program in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis
in biology is a non-thesis program. For the interdisciplinary studies
degree program, consult that section in this catalog.
