These programs are designed to offer teachers an opportunity to become proficient in implementing the latest strategies for effective learning. Opportunities and instruction are provided at all levels as student needs dictate. The programs described here involve analysis of current research and practice.

GRADUATE DEGREES
Admission Requirements

Eligibility for admission to a graduate degree program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is determined primarily on the basis of predictors of success in graduate study: a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, grade point average computed on the last 60 undergraduate hours, and score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Consideration for admission is also given to one or more of the following: the applicant's demonstrated commitment to his or her chosen field of study, socioeconomic background, multilingual proficiency, geographic region of residence, first generation of family to graduate from an undergraduate program and involvement and level of responsibility in other matters including extracurricular activities, employment, community service, or family responsibility of raising children. Applications for program admission are available in the Office of Graduate Studies and the College of Education and Psychology, and should be completed and returned with all required data during the student's first nine hours of graduate enrollment.

  Twelve semester hours are required in the support area. A minimum of six must be completed in courses outside the major area. All courses must be approved by the student's advisor.  

Master of Arts in Teaching: Total Semester Credit Hours = 39
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, in conjunction with other academic departments, offers the Master of Arts in Teaching for individuals who have a baccalaureate or graduate degree and who are seeking secondary certification. This degree provides course work leading to secondary certification in Texas.

This degree requires 18 semester credit hours of professional development course work and 18 semester credit hours in the academic area of certification. Some prerequisite course work may also be required. Student teaching may be completed through alternative routes, including, but not limited to an internship program or traditional student teaching.

Certification to teach at the secondary level may be obtained by students holding baccalaureate degrees in Art, Biology, Computer Science, English, History, Journalism, Mathematics, Music, Political Science, Sociology, Speech and Theatre.

Admission Requirements
A. Must have an undergraduate or graduate degree in the academic area in which the student is seeking certification. Currently, these areas are Art, Biology, Computer Science, English, History, Journalism, Mathematics, Music, Political Science, Sociology, Speech and Theatre.
B. Must meet admission requirements for graduate study in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Eligibility for admission to a graduate degree program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is determined primarily on the basis of predictors of success in graduate study: a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, grade point average computed on the last 60 undergraduate hours, and score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). E. Must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program prior to the beginning of professional education course work.

Advising
A. Each student in the Master of Arts in Teaching program will have an assigned advisor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
B. Each student in the Master of Arts in Teaching program will have an assigned advisor in the academic department of content specialization.
C. Each advisor will have sole responsibility for their respective areas of advisement.

Certification
In addition to Master of Arts in Teaching degree requirements, students will be required to complete additional requirements for certification. Included in these requirements will be student teaching, an internship, or other alternatives to student teaching. The advisor in Curriculum and Instruction should be consulted early in the program for information regarding these requirements.
All individuals seeking initial certification in Texas must pass the appropriate state administered certification test (the Examination for Certification of Entering Teachers, or ExCET).

DEPARTMENT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD, READING, AND SPECIAL EDUCATION

The Department of Early Childhood, Reading and Special Education offers two graduate degrees: the Master of Arts and the Master of Education. Programs within the department include early childhood, reading, and special education. Course work is also available in American Sign Language, bilingual and gifted education.

Early Childhood Education

This major is designed to provide an opportunity for training and experience in child development, curriculum design, and instructional resources relevant to early childhood programs with children ages birth through eight. Students in the program have opportunities to make practical application of content and to develop skills in identifying and prescribing for the needs of young children. Opportunities are provided for students to develop leadership skills as needs dictate.

Supplement

The early childhood supplement can be added to any standard teaching certificate. The supplement requires 12 semester hours in early childhood education. The following courses are required: EDEC 5340, EDEC 5348, and EDEC 5352. The fourth course is chosen with advisor’s approval. An individual who has taught full time under contract in a kindergarten program for one year may substitute an additional course in early childhood education for EDEC 5352 Graduate Practicum in the Kindergarten.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the graduate program in early childhood education, a prospective student must:

1. Gain acceptance for graduate study at The University of Texas at Tyler;
2. Complete the Early Childhood area of the Graduate Study Application and submit to the Office of Graduate Studies;
3. Present official scores on the Graduate Record Examination sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies. Students who successfully complete the degree program normally have a cumulative score of 800 or higher on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. Students who do not have satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination may be provisionally admitted under the condition that they obtain a grade of “B” or higher on a prescribed set of graduate courses that are approved by the degree program; G

READING EDUCATION

The Reading Education area of the Department of Early Childhood, Reading, and Special Education offers the Master of Arts and Master of Education degrees in reading. The Department also offers the Master Reading Teacher and Reading Specialist Certification programs. The program addresses establishing, maintaining, and evaluating reading programs on a building level or system-wide basis.

Certification

The Reading Specialist (K-12) certificate is available at the graduate level. This certification program requires three years of classroom teaching experience, a valid Texas teaching certificate, a master’s degree, the completion of an appropriate course sequence and TExES #151. The Master Reading Teacher Certificate is available at the graduate level. This certification program requires three years of classroom teaching experience, a valid Texas teaching certificate, the completion of an appropriate course sequence, and ExCET #085. Application for these reading certificates is made through the Office of Teacher Certification.

1. Gain acceptance for graduate study at The University of Texas at Tyler;

Although a student is allowed six years to complete a graduate degree program in reading, the degree requirements may change during the six year period as state and local requirements are revised.  

SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Special Education area of the Department of Early Childhood, Reading, and Special Education offers the Master of Arts and Master of Education degrees in special education and educational diagnostician certification programs. The Master of Arts degree program is structured primarily as a research-oriented degree with no teacher certification required. The Master of Education degree program is designed to fulfill academic requirements for certification as a special education teacher or as an U educational diagnostician.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Master of Education degree in special education, a prospective student must:

1. Gain acceptance for graduate study at The University of Texas at Tyler;
2. Complete the Special Education Area of the Graduate Study Application and submit to the Office of Graduate Studies;
3. Present official scores on the Graduate Record Examination sent directly to the Office of T Graduate Studies. Students who successfully complete the degree program normally have a cumulative score of 800 or higher on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. Students who do not have satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination may be provisionally admitted under the condition that they obtain a grade of "B" or higher on a prescribed set of graduate courses that are approved by the degree E program;
4. Consideration for admission is also given to one or more of the following: the applicant's demonstrated commitment to his or her chosen field of study, socioeconomic background, and involvement and level of responsibility in other matters including extracurricular activities, employment, community service, first generation of family to graduate from an undergraduate program, family responsibility of raising children, multilingual proficiency, or geographic region of residence.

Certification

SPECIAL EDUCATION
Emphasis in special education provides the student with the opportunity to deal with academic and behavioral needs of individuals with disabilities in a full continuum of educational settings. Field experiences are selected to be compatible with the student’s particular interests and professional objectives. Certification can be earned by a person who holds a valid teaching certificate in certain fields, has completed 24 semester hours of prescribed course work and who receives a passing score on the appropriate TExES examination. Required courses for completion of the certification at the graduate level include EDSP 5350, 5357, 5360, 5363, 5364, 5368, 5370 and three semester hours approved by the student’s advisor. The academic requirements for certification can be completed through a master’s degree program.
EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSTICIAN
Emphasis in educational diagnosis provides the student with the opportunity to assess the competencies of individuals in language, sociological, physical, and behavioral/emotional areas, intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, and educational performance using informal and formal measures, and prescribe individualized education plans based on test results. The educational diagnostician certificate requires a valid Texas teaching certificate, two years of classroom teaching experience, an earned master's degree, and successful completion of the TExES examination for certification.

C. Proficiency in American Sign Language as measured by an approved examination.
D. Twelve semester credit hours of lower division course work at Tyler Junior College including SGNL 1401, SGNL 1402, SGNL 2301, and SGNL 2302 E.
E. Twelve semester credit hours of upper division or graduate coursework including ENGL 4376/ 5383, ENGL 4377/5384, EDSL 5310, and EDSL 5320
F. TExES Requirement: American Sign Language

BILINGUAL EDUCATION SUPPLEMENT
A supplement in bilingual education is available through the Department of Early Childhood, Reading and Special Education. Certification requirements conform to standards approved by the State T Board for Educator Certification :

A. Bachelor’s degree  
B. Valid Texas teacher certification  
C. Oral and written proficiency in the language of the target population as measured by approved E examination.  
D. Twelve semester credit hours in graduate coursework including ENGL 4376/5383, ENGL 4377/ 5384, EDBE 5338, and EDBE 5376 or equivalent  
E. TExES and TOPT Requirements: Bilingual Supplement.  

Gifted and Talented Education
A supplement in gifted education is available through the Department of Early Childhood, Reading, and Special Education. Certification requirements are:

A. Bachelor’s degree
B. Valid Texas teacher certification
C. Twelve semester hours of graduate work including EDGT 5354, 5355, 5360, and 5362
D. Three semester hours of practicum or one year of successful classroom teaching experience in a program for gifted and talented students. A letter on school district letterhead from the district administrator responsible for gifted education must be submitted with the application for certification to verify one year of classroom teaching experience with gifted students.
E. A supplement in gifted education may be completed in conjunction with master degree programs in reading, special education, or curriculum and instruction.
