COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
SCHOOL OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

ART PROGRAM
Gary Hatcher, Chair

OBJECTIVES
The Art Program is part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at UT Tyler. Programs of study are offered for those students wanting to pursue carriers as professional artists as well as those seeking professions in the field of art. The curriculum and mode of operation within the Art Program resemble a professional art school, with a broad based liberal arts education. Students may select an emphasis in studio art, art education or art history.

The prospective art major should be aware of marked differences in degree programs. Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree programs emphasize the creative disciplines of studio art and art education for the professional development of individual creative talent. The B.F.A. degree is the preferred preparatory degree for students wanting to pursue studio art, art education and the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) graduate degree. The Bachelor of Arts in Art (B.A.) degree program emphasizes a broad liberal arts education with art specialization in the supportive role. Students wanting to pursue graduate studies in art history often select the B.A. degree with its 12-hour foreign language requirement, which is not required for the B.F.A. degree.

Students should consult an art advisor in their first semester at UT Tyler to plan a course of study in art. A degree plan must be complete in consultation with an art advisor during the students first semester at UT Tyler. The Art Program secretary should be consulted to find out which advisor has been assigned to the student.

If the student is denied entry into the B.F.A. degree program, they may submit another portfolio after nine (9) hour but before attempting more than eighteen (18) hours of course work at UT Tyler. The Faculty Review Committee upon request from the student may waive the review process. (Note: If not admitted to the B.F.A. degree program, course work done after the eighteen (18) hour review will not apply towards the B.F.A. in Art degree.)

Students should consult their art advisor if considering the B.A. in Art degree.
